Grammy-winning R&B superstar Ne-Yo has officially entered a new chapter of his career. On Friday, May 22, he released his latest single, "Ms. Tundra", serving as a preview for his highly anticipated album, Highway 79.

Described by the artist’s team as a "high-tempo, line dance-ready anthem," the track was co-written by Ne-Yo alongside frequent collaborator Claude Kelly and producer Chuck Harmony. Following the earlier releases of "Simple Things" and "Up Out & Gone," "Ms. Tundra" continues to showcase playful storytelling and an infectious, crowd-driven energy that bridges the gap between R&B smoothness and country liveliness.

A Homage to Roots: The Story Behind "Highway 79"

The title of the upcoming record, Highway 79, holds personal significance for the 46-year-old artist. It serves as a nod to his birth year and references a highway in Arkansas, where Ne-Yo was born.

Ne-Yo first hinted at this genre-bending project during an appearance on the Joe and Jada podcast last year. However, it was at the 59th Country Music Association (CMA) Awards in Nashville in November 2025 that he elaborated on his vision. Speaking to iHeartRadio on the red carpet at Bridgestone Arena, Ne-Yo clarified his stance on labeling the project.

"My next project is a country-inspired project. I won’t call it a country album because I’m not a country artist. I feel like that’s a little disrespectful. But definitely inspired by all the things I love about country music," Ne-Yo stated. He cited legends like Garth Brooks and Reba McEntire as early influences that sparked his lifelong appreciation for the genre.

Checking Off a Bucket List Item: The Grand Ole Opry Debut

The CMA Awards weekend marked a monumental milestone for Ne-Yo. After presenting an award at the ceremony, he made his debut performance at the historic Grand Ole Opry the following night.

To honor the 20th anniversary of his breakthrough hit "So Sick," he performed the classic track, debuted "Simple Things," and joined forces with The War and Treaty for a cover of Rascal Flatts.

"It was a literal dream come true for me. I could not be more grateful," Ne-Yo shared. He noted that while he had performed globally at the Grammys, AMAs, and MTV Awards, the Opry remained a coveted venue he wasn't sure he would ever grace. "The Opry is one of those that was on the bucket list... I get to mark it off tomorrow," he said in November 2025.

Nashville’s Warm Welcome

Contrary to warnings he received about Nashville being "cliquey," Ne-Yo reported a surprisingly warm reception from the country music community. In a recent interview with Joseph Hudak of Rolling Stone on the Nashville Now podcast, Ne-Yo admitted his initial apprehensions were unfounded.

"I hate to admit it, but I came out here kind of expecting something like that. And I gotta say, my experience has been the exact opposite," he revealed. "Every single person that I’ve worked with out here has embraced what I’m trying to do with open arms." He noted that collaborators are intrigued by the fusion of his signature style with traditional country elements.

What’s Next?

Ne-Yo is currently touring alongside Akon on the "Nights Like This Tour." Fans eager for the full body of work can mark their calendars: Highway 79 is set to arrive on July 10, 2026.
